Current Works at Rookery Pit

Many residents will have noticed considerable works commencing at the Rookery Pit site.  This current activity is concerning the Low-Level Restoration Order.

This order effectively puts the pit back into good condition after its history of clay extraction by stabilising the pit sides etc.

This activity would usually be undertaken by the land owners (in this case O & H) however – we understand that Covanta has employed contractors to carry out the order at their own expense.

We understand these are the same contractors that will be undertaking the build of the Incinerator and associated buildings – but we are told they do not anticipate this to commence this until October 2017.

The order sets out that work can only take place between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00 Monday to Friday and 07:00 and 13:00 on Saturdays.  No works to take place on Sundays, Bank Holidays or Public Holidays.

Please Note: The Environmental Permit remains under review and has not been granted. Unfortunately – Covanta is still fully entitled to construct the Incinerator buildings.  They are not able to operate the buildings as an Incineration plant without the Environmental Permit.

Please see the Low-Level Restoration Documentation:

  1. as it appears as part of Covanta’s planning permission documentation
  2. as it has been given to BACI from Central Beds Waste and Minerals Team when requested recently

We are in contact with the Waste and Minerals Team and are in the process of gathering additional information regarding the specifics of the restoration and will post any other key documents as we receive them.

The BACI You-Tube Channel includes footage of Rookery Pit South prior to Covanta interference in 2010 and 2011. Please Click Here to View.
