| This is the joint statement issued by Central Beds Labour to cover all 59 Labour candidates.
The Labour Party across Bedfordshire opposed the planning application for the Covanta incinerator. We supported the local campaign groups.
Unfortunately planning permission was granted so we now have to ensure that the highest environmental standards are enforced.
A Labour Central Bedfordshire Council would:
- monitor air pollution in the area and if there are unacceptable levels take action against the company
- liaise with and press the Environment Agency and other regulators to enforce the planning conditions; and EU and UK regulations
- support and work with local community groups
- monitor traffic movement and take any necessary action to control vehicle access
